Interaction Designers vs Algorithms by Giles Colborne (cxpartners UK)

Are your design skills about to become irrelevant in an age of AI? Or can you reinvent yourself in time? You might have heard that smart algorithms are the next silver bullet. Data scientists promise that algorithms will read customers’ data and magically predict their needs, bringing them the information they want, when they want it. In this talk Giles Colbornewill look what algorithms are good for, and where they fall down.

Rather than traditional departments, TransferWise is organised into several highly autonomous teams, each focused on solving a specific business or customer problem. It’s the very essence of a lean approach – effort invested is justified by quantifiable impact. So what does this mean for design? How can you measure the impact of good design? Can you justify change because ‘it feels better’?

About Duncan

Duncan is a Design leader with broad experience leading creative teams to help businesses discover opportunities, define solutions and deliver great products.

At TransferWise, Duncan leads a small team of designers building products that feel simple, fast, safe and fair for millions of people around the world.

As a co-founder at Aether, Duncan built a company to design and ship Cone, a thinking music player that gives it’s owners a simple, instant and fun way to hear music at home.

As a Creative Director at Nokia, Duncan led the design team behind the N9’s Swipe user interface, a fresh and natural way to create an all-screen device and a huge leap forward for the company. Before Nokia, Duncan was Head of Product Design at Skype finding new and simple ways to help hundreds of millions of people all over the world to feel closer.

A Designers’ Guide To Empathy with Philipp Sackl

We spend more time in our browsers than in bed and more time with our smartphones than with our families. Computing and digital user interfaces are now woven into the fabric of everyday life. As designers, we are no longer just tampering with people’s productivity, we are handling the worlds most precious resource: attention.

This talk examines the challenges of building empathy with a global audience. It takes a critical look at how design decisions shape our everyday lives and at our role as mediators between the interests of users and businesses.

Without ROI there’s no design by Sol Mesz

Without design there is no product. But without product there’s no design. That’s why the user experience must be conceived with business goals in mind. But Designers tend to focus on the users, while the Business on KPIs, creating a gap that’s difficult to bridge. Thus, Designers feel excluded from product decisions, and Business areas feel that Designers don’t consider business needs into their designs. This talk shows the role of Design seen from a Product Manager’s perspective, and provides a few ideas that can help Design and Business understand each other in order to improve communication, increase collaboration and avoid friction. These tools will help Designers increase their influence in Product decisions.

Putting People at the Heart of Government with Anna Wojnarowska

Placing people at the heart of government projects in the UK has led to innovative ways of bringing about change in the public sector. In my talk I will show how the Government Digital Service focuses on understanding the culture, motivations and needs of the Civil Servants by using ethnographic methods to support technology transformation projects. By following this method and planning research across every stream and phase of the project it’s possible to identify the biggest opportunities for change, whether technology, service or policy-driven. I will explain about this approach using two examples of projects I worked on, in the Cabinet Office and Home Office.

unnamed

About Anna

Anna Wojnarowska is a user researcher at Government Digital Service (GDS) where she specialises in IT transformation for the British government. For the past two years she has been working within the Cabinet Office conducting ethnographic investigations on the daily lives and work practices of civil servants in order to make government services faster, clearer and simpler. She worked with the Home Office and related organisations on national security.
