Our next session will be about a personal point of view, about an approach to the design of products, software and services. With Durrell Bishop, we’ll discuss the experiments and thought processes he has been using over the years where physical products become descriptive of their system.
Speaker
Durrell is an London based designer who has spent 25 years experimenting with interactive experiences for products, games, installations and new hardware interfaces. His underlying interest is in finding new ways for commercial designs to communicate usefully.
He studied industrial design in London, and after a period of freelance design and photography, joined IDEO. In 1991 he returned to the Royal College of Art in London for a masters in interaction design and he then stayed on to continue research at RCA and with Interval Research in California. Later he designed camera-based games with his company “Dancing Dog” and then set up “itch” in partnership with Andrew Hirniak to work on award-winning interactive exhibitions. After another spell with IDEO in London, he set up “Luckybite” with Tom Hulbert. Their practical skills in design and technology let them work on a wide range of projects from installations, new physical interfaces for products, to innovative interaction concepts for software and services. He later worked with Berg on “Little Printer”, “CloudWash” and “Pixel Track” and in 2015 with Jack Schultz and Timo Arnall on Googles miniature radar “Soli”.
He has taught regularly at the Royal College of Art on Product Design, IDE and Interaction Design. He is currently is running a unit in Product Design exploring how products communicate.
