Our next session will be about a personal point of view, about an approach to the design of products, software and services. With Durrell Bishop, we’ll discuss the experiments and thought processes he has been using over the years where physical products become descriptive of their system.

Speaker

Durrel

Durrell is an London based designer who has spent 25 years experimenting with interactive experiences for products, games, installations and new hardware interfaces. His underlying interest is in finding new ways for commercial designs to communicate usefully.

He studied industrial design in London, and after a period of freelance design and photography, joined IDEO. In 1991 he returned to the Royal College of Art in London for a masters in interaction design and he then stayed on to continue research at RCA and with Interval Research in California. Later he designed camera-based games with his company “Dancing Dog” and then set up “itch” in partnership with Andrew Hirniak to work on award-winning interactive exhibitions. After another spell with IDEO in London, he set up “Luckybite” with Tom Hulbert. Their practical skills in design and technology let them work on a wide range of projects from installations, new physical interfaces for products, to innovative interaction concepts for software and services. He later worked with Berg on “Little Printer”, “CloudWash” and “Pixel Track” and in 2015 with Jack Schultz and Timo Arnall on Googles miniature radar “Soli”.

He has taught regularly at the Royal College of Art on Product Design, IDE and Interaction Design. He is currently is running a unit in Product Design exploring how products communicate.

During this current period of accelerated change, it has become increasingly clear that design offers a lot to the business world. To designers, it is easy to see why. Design clarifies vague, ambiguous situations. Design builds tangible, meaningful solutions that address latent, unarticulated needs of real people. Design even creates productive collaboration among unlikely players within organisations. And yet, many organizations are still often either too slow or too mired in old ways of operating to make use of what design can offer. This talk will tell some success stories and offer a few insights about how design and designers can help catalyse organisations and make them more dynamic, open to growth, change, and potentially even to happiness.

In a design project we find ourselves facing challenges not necessarily related to the design itself, for example an incomplete briefing, unaligned expectations between stakeholders, long meetings without a clear insights for the project, etc. An effective alternative in facing these challenges is conducting a strategic design workshop, which consists basically on a hands-on working session with everyone involved in the project. This session’s main objective is to gather and align the vision of all the stakeholders through the application of an array of design methods and activities.

There is one thing that makes a workshop different from any sort of meeting, and it is applying a process and a structure, and planning accordingly. For example, there are known creative processes to facilitate conversations or divergences to allow every point of view to be taken into account, instead of debates.
