7 User Research Methods to Cover Every Corner. IxDA Munich

Usability comic

In web-based companies, User Research is often misunderstood for a usability test performed after developing the product, but it actually begins the moment we learn about a project, whether we acknowledge it or not.

In her talk, Razan will describe a set of investigative techniques used to add context and insight to the design process. Those techniques can be incorporated before, during, or after the design solution is established. The insights gained from research help us focus on the target audience needs and combat the natural tendency to design for ourselves, or our stakeholders.

Applying research methods continually in your design and development process helps you meet your users great expectations, by providing them with a compelling user experience that is useful, usable, and desirable.

The methods discussed in this talk should help you:

  • Know if your product or service is needed in the market
  • Find the flaws in your product
  • increase the efficiency and effectiveness
  • Learn how to do a regular check up.

Hooked: How to build habit-forming products (UX Book Club)

Why do some products capture our attention, while others flop?
What makes us engage with certain products out of habit?
Is there a pattern underlying how technologies hook us?

This book introduces readers to the “Hook Model,” a four steps process companies use to build customer habits. Through consecutive hook cycles, successful products reach their ultimate goal of bringing users back repeatedly — without depending on costly advertising or aggressive messaging.
Hooked is a guide to building products people can’t put down. Written for product managers, designers, marketers, startup founders, and people eager to learn more about the things that control our behaviors, this book gives readers:

– Practical insights to create user habits that stick.
– Actionable steps for building products people love.
– Behavioral techniques used by Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and other habit-forming products.

Speaker

IxDA Munich January: Designing Impactful Experiences

Designing impactful experiences

AirBnb, Skype, Nintendo Wii, Netflix, Tata Nano,… Recent evolutions in technologies are fostering new services and experiences, which shake incumbent companies and business models. Of all contexts where this has happened, the most radical and disruptive is probably the African one. Despite the many challenges — dumbphones instead of smartphones, low literacy level, scarcity of PCs — we have seen innovation flourish in the past few years. Starting with the creation of services for underserved populations and niches of people who don’t use the typical or current solutions.

Showcasing some of the most innovative start-ups in the African continent, Franco will present some of challenges of designing products and services when driven by impact rather than features. He also reflected on the learnings and how these can be applied to user experience projects for products in European contexts.

Speaker

Franco Papeschi works at the Web Foundation, where he’s responsible for the Mobile Entrepreneurship Initiative. They have created labs (in Kenya, Ghana, Senegal) that are community catalysts, training centres and incubation hot-spots for creating social impact start-ups. Also, he’s one of the co-founders of Design Jams.
